SUMMARY:AAOHN Webinar - Mental Health: Bi-polar Disorder in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Join the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) for an insightful webinar led by Julianne Armijoju\, FNP-C\, MSN\, RN\, Ph.D. pre-candidate\, as she delves into the complexities of bipolar disorder (BP) among registered nurses. Drawing from an extensive literature review\, this session is tailored for occupational health nurses seeking to enhance their understanding of bipolar disorder and its implications in the healthcare setting. You’ll explore the signs\, symptoms\, and socioeconomic impacts of bipolar disorder on RNs and learn practical strategies for supporting both patients and colleagues affected by the condition. Don’t miss this opportunity to elevate your practice and make a positive impact in your workplace. \nMental Health: Bipolar Disorder in the Workplace\nTuesday\, September 10th | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CT\n1.0 Contact Hours\nSpeaker: Julianne Armijo\, FNP-C\, MSN\, RN\, Ph.D. pre-candidate \nWhile much is known about nurses with other mental health conditions\, such as depression\, PTSD and anxiety\, virtually nothing is known about nurses with bipolar disorder. Bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) are serious psychiatric conditions correlated with high rates of suicide\, substance misuse\, hospitalization\, and cardiometabolic diseases. Little is known about how BSDs affect American registered nurses (RNs) diagnosed with the condition. Occupational Health Nurses working with a general working population will gain knowledge and identify risk factors and socioeconomic impacts influencing American RNs diagnosed with bipolar disorder. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder and gain a deeper understanding of the types and subtypes of bipolar disorder and how they may manifest in co-workers or their patient population.\nDescribe general bipolar disorder drug classes and how they affect patients.\nRecognize the critical need for suicide risk assessment. Identify triggers that are unique to their work environment and patient population.\nComprehend how to foster education and advocacy for self\, co-workers and patients and describe how the Americans With Disabilities Act affects workers with bipolar disorder.\n\nLearning Outcome: \nParticipants will begin to grasp the challenges of being a nurse with bipolar disorder in the workplace. They will also understand some ways to support their co-workers with bipolar disorder. Additionally\, learners’ understanding of the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder can be applied to patients to ensure they receive a correct diagnosis and proper care. \nMembers: $0\nNonmembers: $30 USD \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:AOHNA Education Session - Waking Up to Fatigue Factors in the Workplace\, Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique approach for fatigue management that focuses on engaging and connecting on the topic of fatigue through education and awareness building. This awareness\, combined with fatigue related operational optimization\, allows for a foundation to communicate on the issue of fatigue and to develop processes to better manage the issue. \nDid you know…\n•  Fatigue is 4X more likely to cause worker impairment than drugs or alcohol\n•  A fatigued employee is 3X more likely to be involved in a workplace incident\n•  Fatigue is estimated to cause 20% of all vehicle fatalities\n•  Unmanaged fatigue contributes to diabetes\, obesity and heart disease\n•  On average\, fatigue is involved in 13% of all workplace incidents \nIt is true! \nYet this prevalent health and safety risk is still largely under-recognized in many workplaces. Even when fatigue is identified as a workplace hazard\, many supervisors and employees are not aware of existing best practices and personal mitigation strategies available to help manage it. \nFatigue can directly impact business goals through poor decision making\, absenteeism\, reduced productivity\, short and long-term benefit costs\, as well as reduced employee retention resulting in increased on-boarding and training costs.  Managing fatigue in the workplace\, however\, is not always an easy task. \nFatigue is an often intangible element related directly to human factors. As such\, it requires a comprehensive approach that recognizes both operational factors and the need for worker education and engagement. In high-risk industries fatigue has been shown to be a significant contributor to workplace incidents. Best practices for enhancing fatigue management in your workplace begins with developing a common understanding of what fatigue is and how to manage it. True fatigue safety culture means that everyone in the workplace must work collaboratively toward comprehensive fatigue management. \nBy the end of this training everyone will better understand the risks fatigue creates and will be empowered with the practical strategies\, tools and countermeasures needed to better manage fatigue at work and at home. \nKey Speaking Points:\n1.  The Issue: How Fatigue Impacts Safety and Health\n2.  Understanding the Basics: Fatigue 101\n3.  Workplace Issues and Barriers to Managing Fatigue\n4.  How to Assess Fatigue Risks\n5.  Managing Fatigue – Strategies & Best Practices \nPresenter:  Susan Sawatzky\, MA Ind. Psych.\, B. Ed\, CRSP\, HSA \nSusan Sawatzky\, MA Ind. Psych.\, B. Ed\, CRSP\, HSA\, Cert. Psych. H&S Advisor\, President of In-Scope Solutions\, is a consultant specializing in the “People Part of Safety” specifically\, focusing on Fatigue Risk Management\, stress management\, mental health and wellness\, Psychological Health and Safety in the workplace\, harassment prevention\, and enhancing healthy workplace cultures.  Susan has over a decade of experience in providing expertise in consulting\, assisting clients in recognizing and assessing operational risks\, creating comprehensive risk management strategies\, and fully implementing strategic approaches by enhancing existing safety cultures.
